As we study Jephthah, one of Israel’s most controversial judges, we find that politics are taking center stage while faith is receding into the background. Jephthah massages history to warn the Ammonite King that Israel is a formidable enemy who should not be trifled with because Yahweh gives land to the deserving. While his theology is correct, his methods are questionable. In the middle of the story we find glimmers of the Divine Council peeking through, and we discuss if Jephthah might serve as an earthly example of what is occurring in spiritual realm. And we see why all of this makes his vow to sacrifice his daughter is so horrifying.
