Joseph is now in charge of the world’s food supply, and his brothers have no choice but to travel to Egypt for food. This trip reveals the depth of Jacob’s favoritism towards his sons, and the sons reveal their true character in how they respond to their father in trying circumstances. Judah emerges as the hero of our story by offering himself as the a guarantee for Benjamin’s life, and in doing so prefigures the Gospel story.
