Severed Thumbs and Feminist Theology (Judges 1) - Faith and Other Oddities Episode 39
This week we jump into the first chapter of Judges. In the first verse, we find that we must question our ideas about what it means for God to be present in the Old Testament, and how we answer this question will be the underlying tragedy of the entire book. As the tribes claim their individual land allotments they immediately begin to adopt the manners and customs of the Canaanites, beginning with severed thumbs and toes of a king and ending with blatant in disobedience through making covenants with the people in that land and enslaving the population instead of driving them out. The one high point is Caleb’s gift to his daughter Achsah. In this interaction our expectations for the women of Judges is set, and we begin to see why this is a favorite book of Feminist Theologians.
